2015: My Resolutions

I find new year's resolutions a little silly. There, I said it. We all know that come February, our renewed enthusiasm for the gym/smoothie machine/savings account usually tapers off and we go back to our slovenly, stressed out, spendy ways. However, I'm only human, and I relish the oppurtunity to go along with the generally accepted 'reset button' which comes around every January.

So I'm going to do it again, but this time, go for smaller, bitesize resolutions, which I hope I'll be able to commit to. I guess the idea here is that by making small changes, I'll be able to achieve my bigger overall goals: graduation with a good thesis and better GPA, dropping a couple dress sizes (it's necessary, trust me), and running a 10k. These goals are big for me, as they're all new, things I've never really set my mind to achieving before, but just saying 'This year, I will run a 10k', doesn't quite cut it! So with that in mind, here are my resolutions for the coming year.

New year's resolutions are all about habits, making them and breaking them. They say it takes three weeks to make or break a habit, and I've found in the past that willpower (well, lack of it) is usually my downfall. With this in mind I'm resolving to become more mindful and aware of myself, the way i think and the way I feel, by meditating each day for 10 minutes. In the past I've definitely found that pretty difficult, so I've downloaded a new app called Headspace, which I really like so far, I'm halfway through their Take 10 programme and I'm really really enjoying it! It's my hope that keeping up this daily meditation for 3 weeks will help solidify it as a habit, and in turn, help me to focus on my other goals!

This year I'm resolving to be leaner in more ways than one! I've decided with a friend to swear off shopping for a whole three months. I don't need more clothes, or shoes, or makeup, or skincare. I waste so much money each month, I counted up and realised that this winter, I've purchased FOUR grey sweaters, I like them all, but I definitely didn't need them. I've already done a pretty brutal closet cleanup, with lots of big bags heading off to the red cross, and some of my nicer items that I've not used very much are being sold (you can check them out here). These kinds of clear outs are always nice to do, and I'm actually really looking forward to a healthier, happier bank account!

The other aspect of my lean 2015 is pretty obvious, getting to work on my body! I think breaking a sweat each day is really important, I have a gym membership, and this year, I'm not afraid to use it! I really enjoy exercise, and my main problem is motivation, so I hope meditation will help with my focus! Eating is obviously a big part of getting healthier, and in keeping with my reduced spending, I'll be drastically cutting down on my 'on-the-go' lunches/breakfasts/coffees, and restricting myself to one such 'treat' a week! There's really no reason for me not to grab a bowl of cereal and a cup of coffee in the morning instead of going out and buying calorific and expensive options.

I will be graduating uni in the summer (knock on wood) and am currently in the process of looking at Masters programmes, but I can't hide from the fact that I am careering towards adulthood at an alarming rate. I have been doing quite a bit of freelance work (graphic design) lately, and selling my wares on my Etsy Store, and I want to build that up over the next year. Keeping it bitesize, I'll be getting my professional website online, sticking to a regular blogging schedule, and taking any and all freelance oppurtunities that come my way! Obviously the most important thing I can do for myself in this regard is to write a great thesis and graduate with a good GPA, so I'm making myself a promise that I won't let my academics slide! My college can be extremely demanding at times, but I am going to try my best not to let it get on top of me, as I only have one semester left to make the most of!

This post was far wordier than I anticipated, but I hope you guys like going a little more in depth. I'll leave you with a little scribble I made.

From my Insta - check it out!

Have a happy, healthy and prosperous 2015!
